A reader asks:
“So, Sensei, what is the BEST way to burn fat when exercising?”
That is, at the bottom of it all, the truth (both my answer, and their rejoinder).
If you bust your butt, no matter what you’re doing, you will burn more fat than if you take it easy or only push a little bit.
- You will burn more calories during the workout, through greater exertion
- You will burn more calories after the workout due to a process called EPOC (elevated post-exercise oxygen consumption); after a strenuous resistance training session, your metabolism remains elevated above baseline for up to 24 hours.
- The harder you work, the more muscle you will build as an adaptive response, and this additional muscle will burn additional calories even when you’re at rest (ie: increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR).
So, yes. “Work hard.”
Now, if you were asking what kind of exercise routine offers the path to the fastest potential results, that’s a different question.
